Czech Republic: Bohemian–Saxon Switzerland — Dramatic Sandstone Landscapes

I visited Bohemian–Saxon Switzerland on May 21, 2025. My friend drove me from Prague, and the drive took about 1 hour and 40 minutes. In that short time, the city faded away and nature completely took over.

First Stop — Sandstone Giants & a View from Above

At our first stop, I stood right in front of a massive sandstone formation. It was incredible to see something so tall and powerful shaped purely by nature. These rocks were formed over tens of millions of years, carved slowly by water, wind, and time. Standing there, it truly felt like a natural heritage, ancient and irreplaceable. From the viewpoint above, I looked down and saw a town below, its red rooftops glowing softly—a signature sight of the Czech Republic. The contrast between the quiet town and the towering sandstone cliffs made the view unforgettable.

Second Stop — The Arch That Stops You Cold

At the second stop, I finally saw it—the big, unbelievable sandstone arch known as Pravčická brána (Pravčická Archway). Standing in front of it, the first thought that crossed my mind was: how the hell did nature create this? It’s massive, raw, and absolutely mind-blowing. No human design could compete with this kind of natural architecture. Seeing it in person hits very differently than photos—it feels unreal, yet completely solid and real right in front of you.

The Walk Up

To reach it, we parked along the roadside and walked uphill for about 35 minutes. The trail was mostly sand, which made the walk more tiring than expected. Every step sank slightly into the ground. Good hiking shoes are a must, especially ones suitable for sandstone terrain. This path will punish smooth soles.

Small Life Along the Path

Along the pathway up to the archway, I noticed ferns, lichens, fungi, and small plants growing everywhere. Seeing lichen was especially meaningful—it’s often considered a natural indicator of clean air, and it made the forest feel fresh and healthy. I’ve always loved small plants, and this place felt alive in quiet details. What fascinated me most was knowing that lichen is a mutualistic relationship between fungi and algae, living together and supporting each other to survive. It felt like a perfect example of balance in nature—simple, resilient, and deeply beautiful.

A Landscape Shaped by Time

This entire region stretches across borders—from the Czech Republic into Germany—known as Bohemian Switzerland on one side and Saxon Switzerland on the other. The landscape was formed roughly 90–100 million years ago, when this area lay beneath a shallow sea. Parts of the park were affected by a large wildfire in 2022, and you can still see traces of it today. Burned forest areas stand beside untouched sandstone cliffs—a powerful reminder of nature’s fragility and resilience.

Final Impression

Bohemian–Saxon Switzerland is wild, ancient, and humbling in the best possible way. Just a short drive from Prague, it offers views and formations so dramatic they feel almost impossible—yet they’re right there, shaped by nature alone, over millions of years.

ที่จุดแวะแรก ฉันยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าก้อนหินทรายขนาดมหึมา น่าเหลือเชื่อที่ธรรมชาติจะสร้างสิ่งที่สูงใหญ่และทรงพลังแบบนี้ขึ้นมาได้ หินเหล่านี้ก่อตัวขึ้นตลอด หลายสิบล้านปี จากการกัดเซาะของน้ำ ลม และกาลเวลา การยืนอยู่ตรงนั้นให้ความรู้สึกเหมือนกำลังเผชิญหน้า มรดกทางธรรมชาติ ที่เก่าแก่และไม่อาจทดแทนได้ จากจุดชมวิวด้านบน มองลงไปเห็น ตัวเมืองด้านล่างที่เต็มไปด้วยหลังคาสีแดง ซึ่งเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของสาธารณรัฐเช็ก ความต่างระหว่างหน้าผาหินทรายโบราณกับเมืองที่เงียบสงบทำให้ภาพตรงหน้าน่าจดจำเสียเหลือเกิน

จุดแวะที่สอง — ซุ้มโค้งธรรมชาติที่หยุดลมหายใจ

ที่จุดแวะที่สอง ฉันได้เห็น ซุ้มโค้งหินทรายขนาดมหาศาล ที่มีชื่อว่า Pravčická brána (Pravčická Archway) ยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าแล้วอดทึ่งไม่ได้ว่า ธรรมชาติสร้างสิ่งนี้ขึ้นมาได้อย่างไร มันใหญ่ ดิบ และน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจสุด ๆ ไม่มีสถาปัตยกรรมฝีมือมนุษย์ใดเทียบได้กับ สถาปัตยกรรมจากธรรมชาติ แบบนี้ การได้เห็นของจริงให้ความรู้สึกต่างจากในรูปมาก—ดูเหมือนไม่จริง แต่กลับยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าจริง ๆ

ทางเดินขึ้น

เพื่อไปถึง Pravčická Archway, จุดนี้เราจอดรถริมถนนแล้วเดิน ขึ้นเขาประมาณ 35 นาที เส้นทางส่วนใหญ่เป็น ทรายหินทราย ทำให้เดินค่อนข้างเหนื่อย แต่ละก้าวยวบเล็กน้อย แนะนำอย่างยิ่งให้ใส่ รองเท้าเดินป่าที่เหมาะกับเส้นทางหินทราย พื้นรองเท้าที่มีดอกยางดีจะช่วยได้มาก

ชีวิตเล็ก ๆ ระหว่างทาง

Bohemian–Saxon Switzerland คือธรรมชาติที่ดิบ โบราณ และยิ่งใหญ่ในแบบที่ทำให้ถ่อมตน เพียงขับรถจากปรากไม่นาน คุณจะได้พบภูมิประเทศที่น่าทึ่งจนแทบไม่น่าเชื่อ—แต่ทั้งหมดนั้นคือของจริง ที่ธรรมชาติสร้างขึ้นตลอดหลายล้านปี
