Istanbul — Last Stop Before Home (2025)

Istanbul was my final stop while traveling from Prague back to Bangkok. Intense, beautiful, exhausting and unforgettable.

Geography & First Impressions

Istanbul connects to the sea through the Bosphorus Strait, linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The city is all hills—up and down nonstop. Cobblestone streets are historic and beautiful, but brutal with luggage. The airport was enormous. Long immigration queues, but many counters—clear proof this country is very popular. Immigration itself was easy. No questions. Just a stamp. I did get a random bag check, quick and calm.

History in Stone

I visited the icons that define the city. Hagia Sophia felt timeless and overwhelming. The Blue Mosque was peaceful and balanced. Beneath it all, the Basilica Cistern was dark, cool, and silent—history hidden underground.

The Cats of Istanbul

I also visited the Cat Museum, but the real magic was outside. Cats are everywhere. One jumped on me while I was walking upstairs and nearly knocked me back down. Another climbed onto my lap while I waited for the tram in the rain and stayed there. In a hard city, the cats were gentle.

Cash Shock & Hard Lessons

This was my nightmare moment. Istanbul still uses a lot of cash and I had none. The airport luggage storage didn’t accept cards, so I couldn’t drop my bag. I ended up carrying heavy luggage all the way to my hotel, up steep hills. Sweaty. Embarrassed. Exhausted.

What I Took With Me

There were frustrations. Taxi cheating. Confusion. It’s a country I know I won’t return to but the experience mattered. Istanbul didn’t comfort me. It challenged me. And when I left, I was stronger for it.

ภูมิประเทศ & ความประทับใจแรก

อิสตันบูลเชื่อมต่อกับทะเลผ่านช่องแคบบอสฟอรัส เชื่อมทะเลดำและทะเลมาร์มารา เมืองเต็มไปด้วยเนินเขาสูงต่ำ เดินขึ้นลงตลอดเวลา ถนนหินโบราณสวยงามแต่โหดมาก โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมีสัมภาระหนัก สนามบินใหญ่มาก แถวยาวที่ด่านตรวจคนเข้าเมือง แต่มีเคาน์เตอร์เยอะ แสดงให้เห็นว่าประเทศนี้ได้รับความนิยมมาก ขั้นตอนตรวจคนเข้าเมืองง่าย ไม่ถามอะไร แค่ประทับตรา แต่ฉันโดนสุ่มตรวจสัมภาระเล็กน้อย โชคดีที่ผ่านไปด้วยดี

ประวัติศาสตร์ในหินและสถาปัตยกรรม

ฉันได้ไปสถานที่สำคัญของเมือง ฮาเกียโซเฟียให้ความรู้สึกยิ่งใหญ่และเหนือกาลเวลา บลูมัสยิด สงบ สวย และสมดุล ใต้เมืองคือบาซิลิกาซิสเทิร์น (อ่างเก็บน้ำขนาดใหญ่) มืด เย็น และเงียบ เหมือนประวัติศาสตร์ที่ซ่อนอยู่ใต้ดิน

แมวแห่งอิสตันบูล

ฉันไปพิพิธภัณฑ์แมว และยิ่งรู้สึกว่าที่นี่เป็นเมืองของแมวจริง ๆ แมวอยู่ทุกที่ ตัวหนึ่งกระโดดใส่ฉันตอนเดินขึ้นบันไดจนเกือบหงายหลัง อีกตัวมานั่งบนตักฉันขณะรอรถรางท่ามกลางสายฝน เมืองนี้โหด แต่แมวอ่อนโยน

ช็อกเรื่องเงินสด & บทเรียนราคาแพง

นี่คือฝันร้ายของฉัน อิสตันบูลยังใช้เงินสดเยอะมาก แต่ฉันไม่มีเงินสดเลย สนามบินไม่รับบัตรสำหรับฝากกระเป๋า ทำให้ต้องฝากไม่ได้ ฉันต้องลากกระเป๋าหนัก ๆ ขึ้นลงเนินไปถึงโรงแรม เหนื่อย เหงื่อแตก และน่าอายมาก

สิ่งที่ฉันได้กลับมา

มีทั้งความสับสน แท็กซี่โกง และความไม่สะดวกหลายอย่าง เป็นประเทศที่ฉันรู้ว่าคงไม่กลับมาอีก แต่ประสบการณ์ครั้งนี้มีค่า อิสตันบูลไม่ได้ปลอบโยนฉัน มันท้าทายฉัน และเมื่อจากมา ฉันรู้สึกว่าตัวเองแข็งแรงขึ้นกว่าเดิม
